A person who is at least 16 may apply for a Learner Permit (commonly called Ls) in South Australia. Applicants must pass a theory test to qualify. A learner driver must be accompanied by somebody who holds a full licence for the vehicle being driven. They must display yellow L plates, not have any alcohol in their blood, not get more than 4 demerit points, and must not travel above 80 km/h.

I thoroughly endorse people taking part in a defensive driving course.
I did so in 1994 and I believe that this contributed to saving my life or at least preventing a serious injury, on Boxing Day 2007 when I had to stop behind other stationary vehicles on a 2 lane highway with a speed limit of 110kph.
I had noticed vehicles in both lanes ahead of me slowing down at a rise in the undulating road ahead and so I said to my wife, "There may be an accident ahead" and I immediately began to slow down, eventually to a stop. I purposely left a considerable distance between my vehicle and the one ahead, as I had been taught. This certainly prevented a more serious accident when another vehicle rammed into the rear of mine at high speed several seconds later.
If not for the large safety gap, my vehicle would have been pushed into the vehicle ahead. As it was, I feel that we only missed it by a coat of paint.
Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle behind had to be taken by ambulance to hospital, whilst my wife and I were fortunate to escape with only minor aches and pains.
I also thoroughly recommend the "2 second rule" where you note when the rear of the preceding vehicle passes a marker post, tree or similar, and then count "one thousand and one, one thousand and two," and make sure that you have not reached the marker or you will be too close and not have sufficient braking time should the need arise.
Naturally, you STILL need to keep alert or that safety buffer will be useless.
It only takes a momentary lapse in concentration to change your life, or another's, into something that you would rather forget.
